Avene Soothing Eye Contour Cream

Avene Soothing Eye Contour Cream - £9.50

I had a major skin meltdown over May this year, it was horrendous! A month of skin hell is putting it politely. I was at my wits end trying to find something that would work to get rid of my itchy, very dry and very red skin. Around my eyes was one of my more severe areas of eczema flare up, and my usual holy grail Dr Organic Manuka Honey Rescue Cream was just not cutting it! Which still makes me sad as i've used that for three years and until now it's worked wonders. But I felt maybe the skin around my eyes would want a cream that was a little less heavier in consistancy. And after researching for many long hours about creams that work would well for around the eye area, I decided to try out this Avene Soothing Eye Contour Cream.

Firstly though I must talk about the brand, as I just love the story of how Avene came to be. Avene is a French brand created after the discovery of the thermal spring water back in 1736 in Southern France in a town called Avene near the Black Mountains, it is the geological aspect of these mountains that makes the water so special. This thermal spring water has been used around the world for centuries to help treat skin conditions, with it proving to have medical benefits, the water was even shipped over to America to help treat the burn victims of the Great Fire of Chicago in 1871. It's kind of like a mythical fairytale, the way this special water has been proven to treat irritated skin. I love stories of brands like this that go back through the centuries. And you know a brand must be good if it has been going for almost 300 years.

This Avene Soothing Eye Contour Cream is indeed pricy at £9.50, especially for only 10ml of product, but I was willing to pay anything to help my eyes out and i'm so glad I did. It has really reduced the redness around my eyes and the dryness has gone completely. I'm now able to wear foundation and concealer around my eyes, without it settling into the dry patches (oh it was not a good look!) and it's all thanks to this cream, as I haven't changed my foundation or concealer.

I just patted a tiny little bit of the cream to my under eye area, and I have used it a bit around the eyelid and brow bone area, but I have another eye product which I prefer for that, which is the Clinique All About Eyes Rich cream which i'll talk about in another post very soon. But for the under eye area it is so amazing. It is, as the name suggests, very soothing and calms and itchiness down completely and just makes the area very soft and not at all dry. I've been loving this so much! I just wish that it came in a larger tube and it was a bit cheaper. I don't know how long 10ml of product will last me but we'll see, I'd like to repurchase it but the price point is a real negative for me. I'll have to do some online research to see if I can get it anywhere cheaper.

If you are suffering with itchy, dry and red skin around your eyes, that are very sensitive to products then i'd urge you to try this. It has no fragrance and no parabens, so it is great for sensitive skin sufferers like myself. I don't know if I could be without this cream now, I just am head over heels in love with it.

Eczema - Water Continued!

Hi my lovelies

You may remember my blog post I did the other day on the importance of water when it comes to eczema, if you missed it then I will link it (Here). In that post I discussed how drinking water was important, but in this Part 2 I will cover all the other aspects of water and eczema. Remember I am not a doctor or any kind of skin specialist, i'm just speaking from 23 years of eczema experience and what i've learnt and found out along the way.

Glass of water by the window

I bet you've read that little header and thought what an earth is she talking about? Well don't worry I thought it mad too at first. I can't remember if someone told me about this or I read/heard it somewhere, but basically the idea is to keep a glass of water on your window sill and over time it will evaporate and create more moisture in the air. It's a very clever little trick that some people may not know about, so it's worth giving that a try. Since hearing this a few years ago I have done this and i'm not entirely sure if it actually works or does make any difference, but I like to think it does, especially when you've got the central heating on in the colder months, which just sucks all the moisture out of the room.

Sea Water

Anyone with eczema who has been in sea water is probably wincing at this right now, I know your pain guys! Getting salty sea water on your eczema is horrendous, it stings like there's no tomorrow! But it is good for you. No one is quite sure why it is though, i've looked it up and all I can see is that it just seems to keep the inflammation at bay a bit and is just a natural cleansing ingredient so it could be that. So its worth going through the stinging sensation for a while to eventually get good results with your eczema. No pain no gain as it were.

Swimming Pool Water

Going swimming in your local swimming pool may help or hinder your eczema. For me it doesn't really affect my eczema at all, but I have heard the chlorine could potentially dry out your skin so that is just something to take note of. Just remember to take your moisturiser with you if you do go swimming, I always forget.

    Baths or showers?

This used to be one of the most annoying things about eczema when I was growing up. I could not take baths at all, no matter what I used my eczema hated it! So i've been a shower girl my whole life, and only now in the last few years has my eczema been slowly improving enough that I can take a bath and use bath products! Oh the heaven! So from my point of view I think, unless you have a bath with no products (so just basically warm water) or you use products like Oilatum (which I did use a lot as a child) then it is not worth the hastle, and have showers instead.
    This leads me on to

    Hot or Cold water?

I was thinking about this question and I don't think cold water affects my skin all that much, well let's face it you don't want to be using cold water on yourself or leaving your hands in cold water for too long do you? so i'm not sure about the cold side. But I know from experience that hot water can be bad for your eczema, I get bad flare ups if I use hot water on myself (hence the whole bath problem). So stick to warm water if I were you.

    Washing eczema hands

This is such a frustrating eczema to have, if you have eczema on your hands it's a real pain ... literally. The more you wash your hands in either just warm water, or with soap too, it will dry out your hands and make your eczema worse! Oh it's a nightmare! So use good natural soap and use a good hand cream afterwards if you feel your eczema on your hands starting to becoming irritated.

So there's just some hints and ideas for you there guys, hope any of it was helpful.
As usual if you have any questions/comments please leave in the comments.

Eczema: The Importance of Drinking Water

Hi guys!

I thought i'd come back and have another eczema post.
This time discussing eczema and drinking water.

Now we all know that water is one of the key ingredients in achieving great skin. Sometimes we can all forget how important it really is, and especially for eczema sufferers it is even more vitally important that we keep up our water intake.
.
Your skin will become dehydrated, very dull looking and even drier if you don't drink enough water. Things like alcohol, tea, coffee and caffeine drinks are not going to help you, however tempting they are. And let's be honest, nothing can quench your thirst like water can, our body craves it, you can use after exercising as a good example. I bet almost all of you would want a nice cool drink of water afterwards, am I right? :)

I have a rule of drinking water all day from the moment I get up, and as I don't drink tea or coffee and I barely drink alcohol, I'm allowed to have fizzy drinks at my evening meal till about 10pm, anytime after that it is back to water again. I've adopted this plan for the past couple of year or so, and it's really helped my skin look much more refreshed. Now I know fizzy drinks are bad for you, but it's my treat for the day so it's not too bad.

You are supposed to drink eight glasses of water a day, this is different in different countries i'm lead to believe, but in the UK it's eight. Now I know for a fact I don't drink that many, but it would be amazing if you could (or do) drink that much. Hats off to you!

I always get asked if I would like a tea or coffee when i'm out somewhere or at somebodys house, and I always say how I don't like it and how I drink water instead. And the other day when I said I drink a lot of water someone actually complimented me and said that must be why I have such nice skin! This compliment was a very big deal for me, and I think if any other eczema sufferer heard someone say that it would make you smile too. So I really think this whole 'just drink water 80% of the time' regime must be doing me some good!

When my eczema was pretty bad a few years ago, and I went on holiday, for the entire 10 days I was there I drunk one glass of fizzy drink and the rest of the time I drank water. It was tough, but I stuck to it to see what a difference it made, and it really helped to make my skin look less dry. It was almost like a detox, a skin detox if you will. The holiday wasn't even in a hot and sunny climate (it was Devon, which is in the South West of England if you didn't know) so it was mildly warm but not that sunny if i'm honest, so I can rule out the sun in playing a part in making my skin look better, it was the water.

So girls and boys if you want to help your skin along, just drink some more water. It may not be the most exciting of drinks, but it's the best thing for you. And also don't take it for granted, which I know we're all guilty of doing!

I will be doing a second post continuing on from this, as water is not just for drinking after all. So keep your eyes peeled for that one if you liked this post.

Eczema : The Nightmare of Central Heating

Over the past couple of weeks or so we've all started to notice the definite cold in the air. Some parts of the country are even getting snow, but none here as of yet. By now I would think everyone has begun putting their central heating on, wearing warmer clothes, wearing more layers to bed and putting an extra blanket on the bed to sleep in.

For me this is definitely the case, because my radiator is not switched on AT ALL throughout the entire year. Regardless of how cold it gets. It is horrible, believe me.

Why do I do this you may ask?

Well the answer to that is, that I noticed that my eczema flares up a lot more when i've been in areas with a lot of central heating. So if i'm near a radiator too long then I will start to scratch. Or if I just feel it in the air it will start to affect me. You may not think something so simple as central heating may be affecting your eczema, but it can, as studies have shown. So I made the horrible decision, as of last year, to switch my radiator off in my bedroom completely. However, it still remains on in every other area of the house, as the rest of my family don't suffer with eczema and don't want to switch it off, quite frankly, who would right?

Has it made a difference?

Yes I can definitely say that it has. I don't scratch nearly as much when i'm in my bedroom. I do feel it affecting my eczema when I leave my room, but I can't help that I just have to put up with it. So if you suffer with eczema, i'd suggest to switch your radiator off in your room for a few nights and see how it works. To counteract the coldness, put more blankets on your bed and maybe wear warmer pyjamas.

Getting out of bed in the morning to a cold room is not an inviting prospect, but it's worth it if it will help you to stop scratching during the night. I used to wake up in the morning and have horrible scratch marks all over the place where i've scratched myself in my sleep, that's when I knew things had to stop.

As a footnote to that I would suggest if you have young children who scratch in their sleep,  perhaps you may want to try putting mittens or gloves on then for them to sleep in. My parents never had to resort to that when I was younger, but if that is the case maybe try it if you haven't already.

Aveeno Moisturising Creamy Oil

Aveeno Moisturising Creamy Oil - 300ml - £7.15

You may be looking at this Aveeno product and thinking what an earth is a creamy oil.
Is it an oil? Is it a cream? What is it for?
Well my lovelies, i'll tell you that is exactly what I first thought when I came across this product too.

I was browsing the Aveeno website and I came across this, now i've been having problems with my legs being very sensitive and itchy after i've shaved them. Whether that be to the shaving gel I was using, or I was applying moisturiser afterwards that my legs didn't agree with.
Thankfully I don't suffer with eczema on my legs (I used to behind my knees but not anymore), they are just very sensitive. So i was on the look out for an Aveeno product I could potentially use either to shave with or to put on afterwards, and this caught my eye.

As you can see from the picture, this looks and feels like a cream but has all the benefits of an oil.

I decided to try shaving with it, my legs were wet from the shower so I used about four or five pumps of this to cover one leg and it was amazing to shave with. And when I got out of the shower, my legs felt so moisturised (I never get that with regular shaving products, my legs always feel dry and horrible). For the first time ever I didn't feel like I needed to put moisturiser on afterwards.

But if I was going to, i'd have no problem putting this on dry skin as I have tried using it that way and it felt like a lovely creamy lotion that was not at all sticky.

I love that this comes with a pump, so it's very convenient to use. Also handy if you want to keep in your shower or by your bath if you wanted to use it to shave like I do. But it is supposed to be used as a general body moisturiser/lotion, particularly after you've had a bath or shower.

I absolutely love this stuff and will definitely continue to use it for my legs. Aveeno is knocking it out of the park with their products for me at the moment, it must be something to do with the Colloidal Oatmeal and the Sweet Almond Oil that they use, which is amazing for my eczema and dry/sensitive skin.

However, I think if you shave your legs everyday (as I know some people do, but I don't personally) then i'm not sure how long this will last you. Nevertheless, if your legs feel awfully dry and itchy after shaving, or if you want to use it as suggested as a regular body lotion/moisturiser, i'd urge you to try this.

Boots - £4.77 on offer - normally £7.15

Lush Ultrabland Facial Cleanser

Lush Ultrabland Facial Cleanser - (100g) - £10.95

The Ultrabland Cleanser is one of Lush's most popular skincare products, the founder of Lush even describing it as their number one desert island product.

After using face wipes for a couple of years to take my make-up off (bad I know) and before the time when I didn't realise how important it was to have a proper skincare routine, I realised how much my eczema could improve if I actually took care of my skin properly.

So I went on the hunt to find a really gentle cleaser, and this Lush cleanser kept coming up as a great recommendation.

So I went to Lush and spent ages talking to one of the amazing sales assistants (they really are the best sales assistants going I think, they are always so helpful and very friendly).
I was explaining the problems I have with my eczema, and I was telling her how I had heard about this cleanser and she suggested that it would be great for my skin.
She was kind enough to give me a sample of it to try (another amazing thing I love about Lush).

So I tried it and I haven't looked back!

This cleanser has a balm sort of texture, it's very smooth and soft when you apply it to dry skin and then wash it off with a damp flannel/cloth or a damp cotton pad. It takes off even waterproof make-up too which is a bonus. It leaves my skin feeling amazingly smooth and injects some moisture back into the skin.

It's key ingredients include:
Honey, Beeswax, Almond Oil and Rose Water

These ingredients help calm the skin down and reduces redness and gives it moisture, which is exactly what eczema sufferers need when a flare up occurs. The name describes this product perfectly, it is indeed a very bland cleanser, but it has all the vital things needed to do the job of removing make-up and cleansing the skin, without irritation.

I'm not sure how well this cleanser would work on oily skin, another Lush cleanser might be more suitable for you. But if you have dry or very dry skin, or sensitive and eczema prone skin like myself,  then this would be great for you.

I am on my second tub of this cleanser, having bought the smaller version first after trying out the sample and loving it, then I upgraded to the larger pot when that one had run out.

I think this cleanser is excellent value for money as it will last you many months. It's my holy grail cleanser and has really helped to improve my eczema, as well as the rest of my skin.

So if you're interested in a new cleanser, and want to try something new, go to Lush and most importantly talk to the sales people there, they are amazingly helpful and you can even ask for a sample first to try it out.

45g tub - £6.95
100g tub - £10.95
Both can be found Here

My Eczema Saviour : Dr Organic Manuka Honey Rescue Cream

Dr Organic Manuka Honey Rescue Cream - (50ml) - £8.69

There is not many products in my life that I would class as my holy grail, the number one, product but for me this is it. It took me 22 years but I have eventually found the one product that has as good as got rid of my face eczema.

It is the richest, thickest moisturiser i've come across and from an eczema sufferers point of view that is what we need in a moisturiser. It has an amazing natural honey scent, it is also hypoallergenic, organic and claims to be suitable for:
Dry skin, sun exposed skin, sensitive skin, irritated and allergic skin.

I think if you have mildly dry skin it may be too rich of a moisturiser for you, but if you have medium dry skin, or anything worse than that, I suggest you try this out.

Manuka Honey has recently been causing a buzz (sorry couldn't help myself) in the beauty industry, with it's amazing benefits for the skin. This is made with special honey that is found in New Zealand and is supposed to be even more effective than normal types of honey. When I first read about Manuka Honey being used in skincare to treat skin conditions like eczema, I searched high and low for a product I could buy and try it out myself, without having to order online, I struggled for a while until I found this in Holland and Barrett. Since then i've seen Superdrug selling a brand called Manuka Doctor, but since i've not tried any of their products, and this cream has worked so amazingly, I haven't even wanted to try anything else.

I love the packaging of this cream in the glass jar, I know some people don't like pots of creams and would prefer it in a tube but it honestly doesn't bother me. Also the fact the cream is so thick i'm not sure how well it would work in a tube.

The brilliance of this cream is that a little goes a long way, I only use this on my eczema areas on my face (around my eyes, my lip and near my nose) and i can cover that all with about a 5 pence piece size on my finger, it is so thick you don't need much more. My first pot of this lasted me from March till the start of October, so it lasts a lot longer than most moisturisers, and i'm now on my second pot with a third waiting to be used.

It says in the direction to apply liberally and on the seriously bad eczema days the more you put on the better i've found. It forms like a protective barrier on your face but I don't find it to be greasy.

Within 1 day of using this product my dryness had improved and the redness went down within a couple of days, and within a week my family and friends were complimenting me on my skin and were amazed at how my skin looked.

I could finally feel confident with myself again and go out of the house without feeling self-concious that people were looking at my awful skin. It's crazy that all of that feeling can come from the results of a skincare product, but its true. I just pray that they never ever get rid of this product, i'll be very upset and will have to bulk buy a lot of it. I just cannot live without this cream.

I want to thank Dr Organic for creating this product, for without it i'd still be suffering with the terrible dryness/redness and constantly itching. I can honestly say I barely scratch my face at all now and if I do, I just pop a bit of this on and the itching subsides in a matter of seconds.

There are also other products in the Manuka Honey range from Dr Organic but I have yet to try them out, but the rest of the range can be found

If you suffer with eczema then please consider this cream, it could help you as much as its helped me. And if you have tried it, let me know how you've got on, i'd love to hear your experiences.

It retails in Holland and Barrett for £8.69
But it is almost constantly on offer for 2 for the price of £13.69

Aveeno Hand Cream

Aveeno Hand Cream (75ml) - £3.69

Having hand eczema is one of the most frustrating kinds of eczema in my opinion, having hands that are itchy, dry and red is not only not nice to look at, but practically it is a pain when trying to do simple tasks such as washing the dishes or even using certain hand washes can cause problems.

With all eczema the key is to moisturise, and so if you have hand eczema you need a good hand cream. Now i've tried many brands of hand cream over the past few years but, so far, nothing comes close to this Aveeno Hand Cream.

It doesn't leave my hands feeling sticky, it sinks in quickly and has the pleasant classic Aveeno scent of oats. It is described as forming a "protective glove" and will last even if you've washed your hands afterwards, and I would definitely say that it does.

I normally apply this a couple of times a day, but on a good hand eczema day I could get away with applying it just once.

If you have eczema then you are probably already familiar with the Aveeno brand, but if you aren't then I urge you to go and try their products.

The cheapest i've found it today is in Boots,
where it is currently on offer for £3.69

But it is also avaliable in Superdrug, Pharamacies and Supermarkets.

Coping with Eczema : Top Tips

Hi everyone

You have eczema? Check.

Want some handy little tips that can help you cope with it? Carry on reading.

1.) Drink as much water as you can every single day (I do not drink tea or coffee, and I don’t drink alcohol (only very rarely), and I have cut down on my fizzy drink intake. Water will hydrate your skin, common sense I know but it helps, really.

2.) Keep a glass of water somewhere in your room and let it all evaporate naturally, it will keep moisture in the air and keep the room more hydrated.

3.) Take showers not baths - the hot water may help or hinder your skin, again this is all based on the individual so baths may work better for you, but for me baths (regardless if it’s just water or with bubble bath etc) are not the best of the two choices.

4.) Use the right washing powder - my mum sorted this out when i was young and whatever she uses does the trick for me.

5.) Also you can buy things for your bedding and even my bedroom carpet deters dust mites and things which can help.

6.) Avoid central heating if you can (this is hard in the winter, my eczema goes nuts when it’s on though), I switched my radiator off in my room completely. Just put more layers on.

7.) Expose your eczema to air - sounds silly but my sister pointed out that I was wearing lots of long sleeved things so i wasn’t allowing my skin enough chance to breathe that much (this is more so if you suffer with eczema on your arms, back or legs).

8.) Wear cotton things as much as you can, rough clothes as you probably know are a no go.

9.) Get out in the sun as much as possible (although if you live somewhere like I do in the UK where it’s basically non-existent, then that can be tricky, but try as much as you can, when its spring and summer get out there :)

10.) Keep an eye on your diet - Fresh fruit and vegetables are better than processed/junk food. Also check when you flare up the most and what food you have eaten during that time, cut that out of your diet for a while and see if that makes any difference

11.) If you’re near the sea, and if you’re brave enough, go and swim in the sea or just put the water on your affected areas. I know the salt in the sea will make your eczema sting like hell (I know its horrendous!) but it does help afterwards (well it did for me anyway).

12.) Talk to your doctor (or go to various doctors for different opinions) talk to fellow eczema suffers/research online about new treatments, you never know you may find the right cream or treatment that will make eczema easier to live with. But also remember what may work for a lot of people, may not necessarily work for you.

13.) I know this is an obvious one and I HATE it when people say it to me, but it is true, really do try not to scratch your eczema if you can. Occupy your hands with other tasks, but if you really have the urge to scratch, rub the area instead of using your nails.

14.) Talking of nails, keep them short. I am actually still a nail bitter and so that help me, but keep them trimmed as short as is comfortable it will stop those horrible scratch marks from occuring.

15.) Avoid products with fragrance/perfumes in them. If you want to try a cheap brand with no irritants try researching eczema suited products such as Simple and Aveeno, they are probably your best bet to start with.

16.) Know that you are never alone. You may feel and look dreadful, believe me i’ve felt that almost everyday, but appearance isn’t everything. If you have good family and amazing friends they will love you for who you are and they wouldn’t care what you look like. And help you through days when you just feel like staying hidden in a dark place somewhere.

Also just to note - Know that i claim to have NO CURE for eczema (Oh how I wish I did!).
I just know that these methods have worked for me, but they may not for you.
I wanted to write this and hopefully if it has helped even just one person improve their eczema in the slightest way then i will be happy.

As usual, any comments or questions please leave them below :)

My Eczema Story

Hi everyone

Well it's time for me to come out of the darkness and confess my reasons for starting this blog.

I wanted to start this because, firstly I love make-up and beauty products. Secondly I suffer with eczema and I wanted to blog about products I love, and that I feel may be eczema friendly/good for people who have very sensitive, dry skin. I just wanted to help out any fellow eczema sisters out there, so yeah that's basically it. Now here is my eczema story.

I have suffered with eczema since I was very young. My mum used to suffer with it until she was a teenager and then it went away, unfortunately for me it did not.

I’ve had it everywhere!

On the inside of my elbows, my hands, behind my knees, base of my back, cracks of my ears, my neck and my entire face (particularly my forehead and around my eyes and the sides of my lips).

Over the years it has come and gone from different areas of my body, for example I used to suffer with it really badly behind my knees (so much so that i could not wear jeans or tights), my first experience wearing both of these was when I turned 13 and not long before that it disappeared and *touchwood* hasn’t returned since. I never suffered with eczema on my face, that was until about four years ago, and let me tell you facial eczema is the worst as you can really struggle to cover it up. And on my hands it only started a couple of years ago.

It’s supposed to get better as you get older (so i’ve been told many times by many people) but my skin is just stubborn I guess.

Like most eczema sufferers i’m desperate for a cure, i’ve tried so many types of creams, ointments, emollients, alternative medicine, chinese herbal stuff, cutting food out of my diet etc. Nothing seems to work. But i’ve got to a stage in my life where i can pretty much cope with my eczema, i’m so used to it now i’ve accepted it.

I have my good days and my bad days, I used to hate having showers and washing my hair - when my eczema was at its worst, I could barely shower or have a bath without my eczema flaring up like crazy! Thankfully my skin seems to have calmed right down and I can cope with using bath and shower products now without having to worry too much. I am a shower girl at heart, it would be rare to see me having a bath, but if I do choose to have a bath I am extremely cautious about the bath products I use.

I used to use all the horrible steroid creams from the doctors and other medical creams when my eczema was at its worst, but now I avoid them altogether! It really is the best thing, unless your eczema is seriously bad. Around my eyes was where my face eczema was at its worse, it made my eyes look very red and scaley, oh it was just awful! And I had to resort to using steroid creams. Which have basically ruined the skin around my eyes and made the skin thinner, to the point where I have fine lines, which isn't so much fun at 23.

I now use a very natural product called Dr Organic Manuka Honey Rescue Cream (which i've talked about here) but it has literally been a wonder product for my face eczema which has as good as cleared up! It is my holy grail, desert island skincare product. And if you have eczema I really urge you to give it a try. It may help you as much as it's helped me. It’s taken me 23 years to find something that seems to work, annoyingly it’s all about trial and error.

Any questions, comments etc please feel free to leave them below and i'll answer them.

If you’re reading this and you’re a fellow eczema sufferer, i just want to tell you you’re beautiful :) I know how you feel. Remember you’re never alone <3

Introduction

Hi everyone

My name is Amy, i'm 23 and from the wonderful country that is Great Britain.

I'm a girl who has always suffered with eczema (including face eczema) and have found many way of dealing with it. I want to share any discoveries I find for other people out there who also suffer with face eczema, and want to wear make-up.

I will show you things that i'm loving, what things work for me and what things don't.

I'll try and make you feel better and hopefully you might see something you would like to add to your ever growing wishlist!

Even my pet cat Tallulah might make a few appearances :)

So sit back, relax, grab a few biscuits and enjoy!

More to come soon!

Love
Amy
